Sovereign and Legal & General Homes to bring affordable homes to Didcot

Sovereign Housing Association and developer Legal & General Homes will deliver 279 affordable homes for Didcot, sharing a commitment to building quality homes in sustainable communities at the Willington Down site.

Together, their joint expertise will deliver 279 affordable homes ranging from one to four bedrooms, suitable for those putting their foot on the housing ladder for the first time, through to families and older residents. These properties will be available at affordable rent levels and on sale via Shared Ownership, giving local first time buyers opportunities to buy with a lower deposit.

These new affordable homes will be located north east of Didcot at the Willington Down site, where Legal & General Homes will deliver 1,239 new homes, together with facilities for the local community including two new schools, a leisure centre and sports pitches. The 250-acre site will be carefully landscaped to integrate with the surrounding green area on the edge of Oxfordshire’s Wittenham Clumps and will improve accessibility to and from the town centre and the River Thames.

Tom Titherington, Sovereign Executive Director of Development, said: “We have an ambitious development strategy; aiming to develop 1,900 new homes per year. Though more important than volume, is the quality of the homes and places that we create, ensuring that the built environment will mature to be the basis for successful, sustainable communities from day one until long into the future. This is why we are delighted to be working with Legal & General Homes in an environmentally conscious manner, to help build quality homes and a real community here in Didcot.”

John Allan, Managing Director at Legal & General Homes said: “Our priority at this development is to create a vibrant place in which people of all ages and backgrounds want to live, learn and enjoy spending time. Sovereign is the ideal organisation to help us achieve this. Together we will deliver affordable homes in a welcoming, diverse community – one that reflects the needs of the local area and helps many take their first steps onto the property ladder.”
